  • Myth as a psychological mirror rather than a literal story
  • How humans make meaning across different life stages
  • The distinction between story (plot) and symbol (psychological truth)

Participants understand myth as a living psychological language and begin using it as a tool for self-reflection rather than interpretation or belief.

🎓 Emotional & Critical Ways of Knowing

“What am I reacting to, and what does it say about me?”

Focus:

  • Emotional reactions (resonance, discomfort, fascination, longing) as meaningful data

  • The felt sense as an entry point into insight

  • Identifying assumptions, beliefs, and internal narratives beneath reactions

  • Finding meaning without literalism or over-analysis

✅ Key Outcome:
Participants learn to balance emotional awareness with critical reflection, allowing insight without overwhelm, detachment, or self-judgement.

🎓 Patterns, Themes & Reflective Inquiry

“Why do the same themes keep showing up in my life?”

Focus:

  • Identifying recurring mythic themes such as abandonment, belonging, sacrifice, power, betrayal, and courage
  • Linking symbolic themes to real-world relationships and decisions
  • Recognising personal values hidden inside emotional responses
  • Using a structured reflective inquiry method to pause, question, and clarify meaning

✅ Key Outcome:
Participants gain a repeatable method for recognising patterns and translating emotional reactions into clear psychological understanding.

🎓 From Insight to Action

“How do I use this without it staying abstract?”

Focus:

  • Translating symbolic insight into practical experiments
  • Turning themes into value-aligned next steps
  • Small, doable actions that create real change over time
  • Guided practice using a myth or fairy tale
  • Creating a personal Myth-to-Meaning action plan

✅ Key Outcome:
Participants leave with a grounded, personal framework that turns mythic insight into lived change, not just reflection.

Kwame Scruggs, Ph.D. is an award-winning cultural mythologist and teacher who uses myth to connect with both youth and adults. He offers a variety of personalized workshops and guided groups, often set to the beat of a drum, stopping at critical points, creating introspection and critical thinking with a keen focus on the art of listening.

Scholar of Myth & Meaning

Dr Kwame Scruggs, PhD, is a scholar and educator whose work focuses on myth as a psychological and philosophical tool for understanding human experience.

Drawing from depth psychology, literature, and symbolic analysis, his teaching explores how myths function as mirrors of internal life rather than historical explanations or belief systems. His approach helps learners engage myth as a living language of meaning, identity, and transformation across the lifespan.

Psychological & Symbolic Lens

Rather than treating myth as metaphor or morality tale, Dr Scruggs teaches myth as a symbolic system that reveals emotional patterns, values, and unconscious assumptions.

Participants learn to attend to their internal reactions — resonance, discomfort, fascination, and longing — as meaningful data rather than distractions. This lens allows insight to emerge organically, without over-intellectualising or collapsing symbols into literal interpretations.

Structured Reflective Method

Central to the course is a clear, structured method for reflective inquiry that integrates emotional awareness with critical thinking.

Dr Scruggs guides participants through identifying assumptions, narrative scripts, and recurring themes that shape perception and decision-making. This method provides a repeatable way to pause at key moments, name insight clearly, and avoid both detachment and over-identification.

Insight Into Lived Action

“Using Myth to Gain Insight” is designed to move understanding beyond abstraction and into lived experience.

Participants learn how to translate symbolic insight into value-aligned actions, small experiments, and practical next steps. The course culminates in guided application using myth or fairy tale material, resulting in a personal Myth-to-Meaning framework that supports clarity, flexibility, and intentional change.
