Who This Training Course Is For
Especially for first responders (firefighters, EMS, paramedics, medics): people whose work regularly exposes them to trauma — but also for anyone dealing with PTSD or trauma from personal experiences. Sundahl draws from his own paramedic/firefighter background.
For people who might struggle with trauma but are resistant or skeptical of “traditional” therapy — art can offer a different, meaningful outlet. Sundahl’s own journey began when a psychologist recommended using photography / art to process trauma — something he initially resisted, but which became transformative.
For those open to combining mental-health therapy + creative expression + community support in order to heal and grow — the course frames healing not as returning to “normal,” but evolving into a stronger, more self-aware, purpose-driven version of oneself.
For First Responders, Anyone With PTSD, People Dealing With Trauma • 10 Modules • Live 2-hour lesson delivered via Zoom
Key Themes and Tools
Recognizing trauma and mental-stress injuries: He helps participants understand and identify symptoms of trauma, PTSD, occupational stress — what can happen to first responders and others exposed to repeated distress.
Art as therapy / creative processing of trauma: A major component is how he uses his artwork — largely based on real emergency calls and traumatic events — to “process and purge nightmares.” The creative process becomes a form of therapy, a way to externalize trauma and begin healing.
Resiliency building & mental-health tools: He shares practical strategies and mental tools for building resilience, coping with trauma, and fostering long-term wellness.
Rewiring mindset / neuroscience of healing: In talks (e.g. podcasts), he discusses how trauma changes the brain, and how through therapy, mindful practices, art and community support one can “rewire” thought patterns toward healing and growth.
Finding meaning, purpose, and growth — not just surviving: The core message is not only “recover,” but “grow” — to come out of trauma with renewed purpose, improved empathy, deeper relationships, possibly even a changed career (or mission), stronger mental strength.
Community, connection, and shared support: Part of the aim is reducing stigma around mental-health issues (especially among first-responders), showing peer-support matters and that you’re not alone. Through foundation work and public talks, he seeks to build community around healing and growth.
What You'll Learn from Daniel's Course
The course — more like a presentation or workshop — is built around the idea that trauma doesn’t have to leave you broken forever: it can become a source of personal growth.

With four published art books to his name, articles on his pieces have appeared in numerous international publications. Daniel’s unique perspective is deeply informed by his background as an Advanced Care Paramedic and retired career firefighter.

Artist & Storyteller
As “DanSun Photo Art,” Sundahl creates striking art, often a blend of photography and graphic editing - largely inspired by his experiences as a first responder.
His works are sometimes based on real emergency calls he attended as a paramedic or firefighter, capturing the emotional weight and trauma inherent in such situations.
The art is more than aesthetic: for Sundahl, it’s also therapeutic — a medium to process his own trauma (including PTSD) from his years on the job.
First Responder
Professionally, Daniel worked for many years as a firefighter and advanced-care paramedic.
This first-hand exposure to trauma and emergency scenes deeply informs his art; many of his images depict EMS (Emergency Medical Services) scenarios, and he channels real experiences into visual storytelling.
Mental Health Advocate
A registered counselling therapist (with the Canadian Professional Counsellors Association) and a certified clinical trauma specialist, with a special focus on trauma and addictions.
He is also the founder/president of The Recovery and Resiliency Foundation — a charitable organization aimed at supporting people living with symptoms of trauma, especially first responders.
Through his art and public speaking, he raises awareness about occupational stress injuries, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and mental wellness among firefighters, EMS personnel, and other first responders.
Global Recognition
His art and writing have been featured in various international publications and EMS-oriented media.
He has exhibited his art globally and speaks internationally about trauma, healing, and the role of art in recovery.
Daniel has spent part of his life teaching English abroad, in places like Egypt, Mexico, Indonesia, and Japan.
