Course Overview
An ancient prophecy of the Eagle and the Condor, here representing the often-polarized science and spirit, mind and heart, foretold that ours would be a time of great upheaval calling for a re-harmonizing, a healing, both within ourselves and in the world at large. We are once again bridging spirit and science.
In this course, we will explore the past 30+ years of scientific breakthroughs known as the Psychedelic Renaissance and relate those discoveries to our growing understanding of the role of spiritual healing in modern medicine.

Week 1: The Return of the Sacred (1990-2003)
How We Got Here
The 1970s didn’t just criminalize compounds—it criminalized consciousness research itself. For two decades, inquiry stopped. Then came the quiet pioneers who risked careers to reopen the door.
- The collapse of prohibition and rebirth of legitimate research
- From “psychotomimetics” (mimicking madness) to “psychedelics” (manifesting mind)
- Reclaiming spiritual vocabulary in a materialist paradigm
Week 2: The Biology of Mysticism (2003-2013)
The Breakthrough Decade
Roland Griffiths’ landmark Johns Hopkins studies changed everything. For the first time, we had data: psilocybin-occasioned mystical experiences ranked among the top five most meaningful experiences of participants’ lives—comparable to the birth of a child or death of a parent.
– How “inter-modular communication” breaks rigid depressive loops
– The neuroscience of “oneness”: when DMN suppression correlates with ego dissolution
– Why mystical experience intensity directly predicts therapeutic outcome six months later
Week 3: The Art of the Guide (2013-2022)
Set, Setting, and the Structure of Safety
The molecule is neutral. The medicine is in the container.
– Why music isn’t ambiance—it’s a therapeutic staple that drives emotional processing
– Navigating the “come-up anxiety” and the wisdom of “trust, let go, be open”
– Clinical contraindications: bipolar history, psychosis risk, medication interactions
– What traditional ayahuasqueros know that clinic protocols are only beginning to codify
Week 4: The Psychedelic Twenties (Integration & The Path Forward)
From State Change to Trait Change
The afterglow fades without work. The insight dissolves without structure. This is where most people fail—and where skilled guides become essential.
- Why integration matters more than the journey itself
- The Watts Connectedness Scale: measuring healing through relationship to self, others, nature, and the sacred
- Practical frameworks for sustaining transformation
- The prophecy fulfilled: when Eagle and Condor finally fly together
Meet Your Course Instructor
The Physician Who Became a Shaman. The Scientist Who Learned to Sing.
Most teachers are clinicians or ceremonialists. Dr. Tafur is both—a living bridge between worlds that Western medicine tore apart.
The Clinical Foundation:
- Family Medicine, UCLA
- Psychiatry Research Fellowship, UCSD
- Years in conventional practice watching patients plateau
The Spiritual Apprenticeship:
- Trained as an Ayahuasquero at Nihue Rao Centro Espiritual, Peruvian Amazon
- Thousands of hours in ceremony learning what cannot be taught in textbooks
- Founder, The Church of the Eagle and the Condor
The Synthesis:
Author of The Fellowship of the River, Dr. Tafur doesn’t just teach psychedelic science. He teaches the lineage—the unbroken chain of knowledge that survived prohibition, pathologization, and cultural erasure.
He speaks the language of peer-reviewed journals and the language of the medicine itself.

The Antidote to Hype Guarantee
Real Tools. No False Promises.
The psychedelic space is filled with hype, promising “net-zero trauma” and instant miracles. At FRBHI, we believe in radical honesty.
This course does not promise you will “bend reality.” It promises to give you the clinical discernment, historical context, and neurobiological understanding required to navigate the most powerful shift in mental health history.
Whether you’re a clinician, a first responder, or a healer, you’ll leave with a grounded, safety-first framework for understanding expanded states of consciousness.
